America--The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly

“America, Thou half-brother of the world; with something good and bad of every land.”  --Philip James Bailey 1816-1902, British Poet

I am a TERRIBLY patriotic American.  My father is a Viet Nam vet and in spite of what many people may think of that war, my father went and did his duty.  God rest his soul.  On the other hand, he always said if there was another damned war like that one he would personally march my brothers to the Canadian boarder.

As an American there is so much to be proud of, and I will be focusing on that as I normally do.  However, in light of this quote I found, I think we all need to remember that Americans have done some heinous things.  Yes, BF, especially heinous.  LOL.  Just like on SVU.

There was slavery, the Trail of Tears, and extermination of the Native American way of life.  We put thousands of Japanese Americans in camps during World War II.  We can never make up for these travesties.  Yes, that means all the Japanese, Indian, and Black people who feel abused, tough luck, because most likely you didn’t live through it or even know someone who did.  If you had you would realize NOTHING could give back what was lost.  Even and most especially money.

America is a melting pot.  I would like to think, in my own naive little way, that most every race, creed, and culture get along here.  Most Americans are good, honest, hardworking people but like the quote alludes to; there are bad apples in every barrel.  I’m sorry for their ignorance but my apologizing for them won’t change their feeble little minds.

I do have a lot of problems with people illegally coming to my country.  People call it “The Land of Opportunity” and I can understand somewhat why people would flock here, but there is NO excuse for robbing hard working people of their tax dollars which we give each and every week to better our country and aid our fellow citizens.

You live here then you are as responsible as every other resident and need to keep this great country rolling.  My Dad used to call it “priming the pump.”   If we didn’t pay back what we borrowed, then there might not be money the next time we needed it.  It’s the same with our country.  Pay your taxes now so we will always have what we need.  If you are illegal, don’t even think you can get government assistance when you haven’t paid the piper.  I’ll be damned if I enjoy forking my money over for no good reason.

I know this is a terrible insular, narrow view of life, but that is my view and opinions are like ass holes and everyone including me has one.  So there it is.  I love other cultures, races, and religions.  Some of my favorite classes have been cultural anthropology and geology.  With all that said, I’m damned proud to be an American.

Every country has their good and bad.  Their frightening and interesting aspects.  I encourage everyone from the US to take advantage of what our great nation has given us. Don’t take our country for granted.  People from everywhere else in the world please visit and enjoy the wonderful natural and cultural wonders we have to offer.  If you want to stay, I encourage you to gain a citizenship honestly like most of our ancestors had to in the past.  We are not perfect by any means but we have a lot to offer, enjoy.

Peace Out.

Well sis. I agree with a lot of what you said. This was an excellent rant. The thing I wanted to talk about the most was the Veitnam vets. My uncle flew a helicopter in that war. My heart goes out to any vet who has served a tour of duty in any war...but especially them. They eperienced hideous things over there, and then come home to a bunch of people who spit on them and called them baby killers. Those guys SHOULD have gotten a huge homecoming and been embraced with open arms. A lot of those boys were sent over there against their will and came home missing limbs, paralyized, and shell shocked. I pray that as a country...we NEVER shame ourselves by treating our soldiers so horribly. A vast majority of the homeless are veterans. That is the thanks they get for doing a job that no one who condems them would have the fortitude to do.

Slavery, the TRail of Tears...there are many things that we as a country need to remember and not repeat. Just like anything young, we have made our mistakes...the point is to learn from them and not repeat them. On that note though, there are plenty of patriotic people who realize that despite our shortcomings we are the best country to live in and GOD BLESS AMERICA...and forgive us our sins.

Your mention of the Native Americans grabbed my heart. I have a healthy dose of Native American blood running through my veins, not that you can tell it with the damn Irish fair coloring and freckles! LMAO Anywhooo As B pointed out we were a young country and well...Kids will be Kids. We HAVE learned from our mistakes and we ARE a great nation. 9/11 brought around a new found patriotism for many. I hope that we NEVER forget or lose that.

A very interesting entry that is Shari, and it had me thinking all day. First off, I'm happy that you love your country so much. There is so much good and great things about it and your culture.

I however have a different approach to patriotism that mostly is influenced by my country's and my own history.
I don't trust patriotism. For me the line between patriotism and fantatism is way too thin and very blurred at times. That doesn't mean everyone who is patriotic is a fanatist, absolutely NOT! But in certain cases it can sway to fanatism. We've seen that oftentimes in history.

I won't say that I'm proud to be German, because that would put me into the wrong political corner immediately. See, that's the thing with my country's history. I was born in 1984, yet I can't say openly I'm proud to be German because people could misunderstand this and think back at the very dark chapter of our history. I have to live with this because this is something that'll never change, no matter if it's 60 or 160 years after WWII, many people will always judge us by this and say we gotta pay for it. *shrugs shoulders*

Back to the topic. There is something I'm proud of, I'm proud to be living close to a great city like Berlin. Local patriotism is ok. And I'm proud to be European, very proud even. I love Europe and this is my home. Like every other community it's far from being perfect. There is nothing perfect in the world, not in humankind nor in nature.

And really, isn't it those little flaws that make everything interesting?

Every country in the world has made mistakes in the past, that's in human nature. But it is also in the human nature to learn from them. I like to think that my own country has learned from its past and I hope, even believe that something like in the 1930's and 40's will never happen again.

Ok, to stop rambling here...I hope that we all will find our peace with our home. I love the US, have many friends and hope to visit it soon. But I don'

ooops...too long! LOL sorry...

continued: But I don't think I'll ever immigrate to the US. I'm just so tied to Europe.

To end this long post...I hope that we all find our home and find a well-balanced way of patriotism that doesn't seperate us from other nations. Because no matter where we live, no matter what language we speak, we're all the same after all. Here's to friendship and companionship beyond national borders.

I agree Mel. There is a lot of great culture and people in other countries as well. No one except the Native Americans can trace their entire ancecstory to America. We all have other cultures in us. My parents spent four years in Germany when my dad was in the Army and often they say that those were the happiest years of their life. My mom is in love with your native land and often pines to revisit it. I am so sorry that there are so many ignorants who assume if you are proud of your heritage that you are a Hitler lover. That is assinine and I don't think that anyone should feel that way. People should be able to be proud to be who they are, where they come from without being stuck into a "group." Anyway...sorry that just annoyed me that you would be immediately stuck in a group like that. And I second the cheer to friendship beyond national borders.

It's wonderful that your parents seemed to like it here a lot. My country surely has a lot to offer (a lot more despite the Octoberfest! LOL I have and will never visit that one!).
As for the Hitler thing...what people seem to forget. This person wasn't even German. He was Austrian. But anyhow...I do love my country to a certain point and though I know it's far from being perfect, I know that I can consider myself lucky living in a rather stable society. I'm proud to almost be from Berlin and i'm not afraid to say so, because this city is one of the greatest in at least Europe, if not the world and I wanna show it to everyone!

But I must say in defense of the people abroad...never have I been treated not nicely because I said I was German. It happened to friends of mine though. We won't be able to shake off our history, but we can try to live with it and make the best of the future ahead of us.

Oh Mel, I have to agree with B and say that the past is past. Just as I said about America, all countries have made mistakes. You certainly weren't involved nor were your parents. People should understand that it's rediculous to penalize people for what went on before. I am proud of my German heritage, Octoberfest and all. LOL. I am also all for thinking for yourself, which will keep the "fanatacism" at bay and allow me to love my country and still know it has flaws that need fixing. I love it "warts" and all. LOL. I'm glad you can enjoy being from Berlin even in being German still brings your or your friends some pain. Those narrow minded people who have a problem with your ethnicity aren't worthy of your time or energy Sis.

Well, I sure picked a day to come in and have a look! :o

First I want to say to Shari that I have to applaud you being so open as to post your views as you did! That's one of the things I'm definitely gonna enjoy about being a part of this kind of group.

Mel - I wanted to cry when I read your opening statement. How depressing it is to have to "hear" a person say they can not declare pride in their homeland because it would immediately put them in the wrong political corner! To say you are proud of your homeland, your heritage, your people is so vastly different from declaring utmost pride in an episode in history!

I went through this with a male friend of mine loooong time ago. He, his father, mother, brother and sister had emigrated to the US when he was younger, but he had always felt ashamed of letting anyone in his new hometown know he was German! In PENNSYLVANIA no less - where you are sure to be either of Native American, German, Slovac, Italian or African American descent that goes waaaaaaay back!

My baby sister was actually born in Guyana, South America. To THIS DAY she can not bring herself to acknowledge this, or the fact she had, until she was twenty one, a dual citizenship. What the rest of us always thought was the NEATEST thing, she agonized over for many years - why? because of some fool named Jim Jones. Again, one assanine incident has left an indeluable mark on many people's lives - even those who had no connection to that incident.

It seems most of us are in agreement in KNOWING that all nations, all countries, all cultures and ethnicities have wrongs they'd just as soon never have to acknowledge or reconsile with. The USA is certainly one of the youngest, and fastest growing of the all. Anyone who is part of a family knows the youngest are expected to learn from the mistakes of the older siblings and relatives; to grow strong and to get farther because they have that knowledge and resources for support from those old

siblings and relatives; to grow strong and to get farther because they have that knowledge and resources for support from those older relatives.

I have always interpruted that passage to mean that America, being the youngest sibling of the world of nations, has - because of the many different peoples that are her content - in her 'DNA' some of the good and the bad of every nation that came before her. Couldn't that be said of any nation?

While I can certainly understand Mel being able to see the thin line between patriotism and fanatisism, I guess I can see that same gossamer line in any faction where human emotion comes into play. It's up to each one of us to see that we don't blurr that line. Like Shari said - think for yourself, and be TRUE to yourself.

Thanks again, Shari and to everyone who commented, for sharing your thoughts!

**Sorry - I had no idea there was a limit in the comments section! :o
